Bioindustrial Innovation Canada Expands National Footprint with New Quebec Partnership in Trois-Rivieres

Sarnia, ON, December 3rd, 2024 – Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) and Innovation et Développement économique Trois-Rivières (IDETR) are happy to announce a partnership to establish resources in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

This partnership marks a significant step in advancing Canada’s bioeconomy by enabling BIC and IDÉ Trois-Rivières to combine and increase their capacity to identify, validate and build globally relevant projects and companies in Canada’s bioeconomy.

The new Quebec focus will allow BIC to better support its partner organizations, businesses, and communities nationwide through collaborative partnerships to drive innovation in industrial bioproducts and sustainable chemistry.

"Our goal has always been to have boots on the ground and partner with regions across Canada to build regional hubs that propel the bioeconomy forward," said Meaghan Seagrave, Executive Director, BIC. "We are excited to partner with IDÉ Trois-Rivières and bring our proven model for developing companies and building clusters to Quebec. This partnership reflects our shared vision of creating a resilient and globally competitive bioeconomy in Canada."

IDÉ Trois-Rivières, a key player in driving sustainable economic development, has played a pivotal role in fostering this partnership. Their collaboration with BIC underscores a shared commitment to harnessing the potential of the bioeconomy to generate positive economic, environmental, and social impacts in Quebec and Canada.

"The strong representation of green technologies in the fundamental research of our university and the applied research of our college research centers has fostered the emergence of a bioeconomy sector. BIC’s decision—a major national player in the commercialization of innovative decarbonization technologies—to establish itself here reinforces our vision of a national bioeconomy ecosystem and adds significant credibility to the ongoing efforts to make our region more attractive in green technologies," stated Mario De Tilly, Chief Executive Officer of IDÉ Trois-Rivières.

BIC’s model, initially launched in Ontario, has successfully catalyzed the development of industrial clusters by connecting industry, government, and academia. This approach has become a blueprint for building regional innovation ecosystems that foster rural economies, job creation, environmental stewardship, and global industry productivity and competitiveness.

The establishment of the Trois-Rivières partnership reinforces BIC’s commitment to scaling this model across Canada.
