Pilot Plant Technologist

Position Summary
DMT Bioproducts is looking for a Pilot Plant Technologist to work on biomass conversion to high-value chemicals. This role will be a hybrid of research and operations support for our pilot plant facility in Port Burwell, ON.

Job Duties

  • Working mainly on pilot-scale activities involving biomass processing to obtain commercially valuable compounds.

  • Development of and adherence to manufacturing SOPs

  • Maintenance of experimental datasheets, and logbooks.

  • Perform experiments with existing miscanthus biomass to obtain desired products, while increasing the product yield and optimizing the process to make it more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

  • Participate and lead stage by stage testing to learn the limitations of time/temperature/concentration and pH for each individual reaction.

  • Support the science team in translating lab scale results to the pilot scale

  • Lead installation and maintenance of reactors, centrifuges, boilers, pumps and instrumentation in the pilot plant

  • Meet with key suppliers for procurement of equipment and maintain records of material and equipment procurement.

  • Monitor the installation of equipment for the pilot plant construction. Ensure that all the process operations are accurate as required.

  • Communicate with management on a consistent and regular basis in the form of reports and in-person meetings.

  • Work together with internal and external scientists and identify and integrate programs that will advance our efforts.

Skills and Qualifications


  • Minimum of a college diploma in a related field (chemical process technology, power engineering, etc.). Other educational qualifications may be considered with appropriate experience.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in operation and maintenance of pressure vessels, pumps, centrifuge, valves etc.

  • Prior experience of working in a pilot plant would be asset

  • PLC controls Troubleshooting experience would be asset

  • Laboratory experience an asset

  • Ability to work independently a must

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment

  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with equipment and materials used in the chemical industry is a must.
